The first post

This blog is intended to explain and reflect about the possibility to take advantage of edible insects for the benefit of humanity and the environment. The perspective in this blog is quite Finnish, but the theme is global.

Insect food's potential has been estimated by many institutions in the last few years. Evaluators have included. major international organizations such as the FAO (The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_and_Agriculture_Organization) and the EU's agricultural bodies. Both organizations, as well as a number of researchers have come to the conclusion that the insect food can achieve significant economic and environmental benefits when compared to current practises in meat production.

I’m preparing to start a company on the subject and my goal is to make this as my main profession in 2015.

I'll start this (English) blog with text about potential of edible insects.

Examples of other topics are:.

- Legislation of edible insects in Finland/EU and abroad.

- Risks related to insect food/economy.

- Manufacturing of edible insects

- Insect food companies in different parts of the world.

- Broader insect technology

It is estimated that at least two billion people eat insects as part of their normal diet. This group consumes many different types insects  prepared in numerous ways. I have included molluscs such as slugs and snails to theme of insect food althought they are not actually insects.

In addition, my the intention is to write two books on the subject. Another about global economy of edible insects and the other insect-related technology. First will be in finnish and second in english.
